Ray Bass has won appellate victories in cases establishing important criminal law precedent. Some examples of convictions set aside on appeal include:

Illegal Detention. A motorist was stopped for a traffic violation and after a drug sniffing dog alerted on his car, police found more than 20 lbs. of marijuana in the trunk. The motorist was convicted for possession of marijuana and sentenced to 5 years in prison. On appeal, Ray Bass successfully argued that  even if the police had a legal right to stop the client's vehicle, the continued detention of the client, to allow the dog to circle and sniff the exterior of his car, exceeded the permissible scope of a traffic stop.

Capital Murder. A capital murder conviction and death sentence reversed on grounds that a potential juror was improperly excluded from serving.

Illegal Stop. A drug offense conviction was reversed on grounds that "reasonable suspicion" to stop and detain a motorist cannot be established by an anonymous tip from a "concerned citizen".

Fraudulent Tax Return. A federal conviction for conspiracy to make and subscribe false tax returns and for assisting the preparation of a false tax return was reversed on grounds that the evidenc presented at trial was legally insufficient to support the jury's guilty verdict.

Investing In A Prostitution Enterprise. The conviction of a business man for allegedly investing in a "prostitution enterprise" was reversed because the indictment failed to properly allege the offense.
