Illegal Detention. A motorist was stopped
for a traffic violation and after a drug sniffing dog alerted on his car, police found more than 20 lbs. of marijuana
in the trunk. The motorist was convicted for possession of marijuana and sentenced to 5 years in prison. On appeal, Ray Bass
successfully argued that even if the police had a legal right to stop the client's vehicle, the continued detention
of the client, to allow the dog to circle and sniff the exterior of his car, exceeded the permissible scope of a traffic stop.
Capital Murder. A capital
murder conviction and death sentence reversed on grounds that a potential juror was improperly excluded from serving.
